How To Stay Sane At The Job You Hate - From Women Whove Been There - When I Grow Up

How To Stay Sane At The Job You Hate - From Women Whove Been There - When I Grow Up In 2011, I wrote a blog post called  8 Ways To Get Through Your Soul-Sucking Day Job Without Totally Losing It,  and to this day it is my number one read and most viewed post. (Gee, do you think something resonated?) For me, choosing to leave my day job was a profoundly active decision, and something I had to focus on sometimes minute-by-minute just to get to the other side of the work day or week or month you guys see where this is going. Miserable bosses, unhealthy work environments or unimpassioned projects are all examples of things that could be eating at you right now in your current job, and it is so important nay, NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL to find a focus point a beacon of inspiration to hold onto to help you out of your sucky situation and into the job of your dreams. Luckily, I know a few (hundred) women who have been there, and have some seriously amazing advice. I reached out to previous clients and asked them for their favorite keep your sanity tactics and mantras that helped give them the drive they needed to make a change, and to survive their day jobs without pulling their hair out. Behold: Inspiration! Hannah Zollman  (Mission Driven Fundraising) I would ask myself, Will the world end if and the answer was always no. Also,  do  at least one thing every  day  to move my business forward. And this quote It does not matter  how  slowly  you  go as long as  you  do  not stop.   Confucius Erin Sanders (EB Sanders) My mantra: NOT MY CIRCUS, NOT MY MONKEYS. I scheduled some time EVERY DAY (before everyone else got in, lunch time or later in the day whenever) to work on something from my own biz. Also, a fellow entrepreneur told me to  think like a goat   because all they  do  all  day  is figure out  how  to f**k shit up and have fun.' Rene Brookbank  (Love Recovery) Unfortunately, I started drinking very heavily at the end. It truly was the breaking point for me. So my funny advice is drink heavily. My real life advice is do everything you can during nights and weekends to get you out of the day job. I sincerely believe that doing what I thought society would approve (said day job) but wasnt in alignment with my hearts desires and my inner knowing and yearning, is truly what rapidly took me down with alcoholism. Figure out your true hustle and begin doing it before you become a full-fledged alcoholic!   Take action every  day. And not lighthearted action. If  you  really want out, hustle  your  ass off to make a new career for yourself. Theres such a difference between complaining about your day gig and doing something about it. Dont be the complainer. Be the risk taker! Julia Ng (The Lucid Path) Turn mantras into passwords.  In  my J.O.B., we had to change passwords every few months, but I started changing them more often to encourage myself. I was chasing my dream to move to Japan, so I switched between goal passwords like JapanHereICome!, JapanInJuly, and keeping-sane  passwords like OmOmOmBigPicture. We had to log into our systems about 482 times every  day, so this was an important focusing tactic for me. If  youre not good at leaving the office on time, get a supportive friend to check  in  with  you. One of my friends would text time check! close to the end of the  day, to make me aware that it was time to leave. The work is never going to be all done anyway, as long as  youre fulfilling  your  responsibilities, leave when its time to go, because  you  need time to recharge and build whatever  youre building! May Flam  (Heal Your Work Life Coach) For me, I actually had to quit my  job  before my ideal savings amount was  in  the bank. My goal was to save $12k before quitting, and I had saved up only  $8k. It was an abusive work environment, and I knew that if I stayed there, I would be too demoralized to work on my side business. If  you  absolutely cant  stay  sane  at  your  job, its okay to quit and and get a bridge  job. After I quit my abusive  job, I actually started babysitting while I built up my client base for my coaching business. Rebecca Morgan  (Choose Awesome Coaching)   It was so easy to feel  sorry for myself and play the victim. I need to remind myself every  day  is a choice. I choose my response, attitude, and behavior to all situations. I am choosing to  stay  in  this  job  as I work on my plan to move to work that lights me. I am choosing to make it happen. I [also] put together a Choose Happy Playlist  Everyday on my commute to work I would listen to it. When I was in my cubicle ice tray working on stuff and needed a bump to get me through I would put headphones on and listen to it again.   If it was on a cassette tape I would have worn that baby out! Lacy Snarr, Illustrator Live with intentionality. Be intentional about creating habits that will promote  your  goals. Consider  your  ideal  day. It may not be possible to live out that entire ideal  day  yet but there may be portions of that ideal  day  you  can incorporate into  your  current schedule. Be intentional about facing fears. Kick  your  fears  in  the face instead of passively being forced to deal with them; either way, eventually, a situation will arise where  you  will have to deal with  your  fears, there is no avoiding it. Start with something small and work up to the really big fears. Be intentional about avoiding apathy. Push yourself outside of  your  comfort zone. Being outside of  your  comfort zone means  you  are learning, growing. Great things come from outside of comfort zones. Be concerned if  you  are too comfortable. If You Have Any of These 12 Things on Your Work Desk, Your Coworkers Probably Think Youre Unprofessional

If You Have Any of These 12 Things on Your Work Desk, Your Coworkers Probably Think You're Unprofessional Some people would argue that a messy desk is a sign of genius â€" and actual geniuses like Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs would seem to be among them. Others, like the people who actually work with and beside you, might find your mess less than endearing. And beyond clutter, items that are varying degrees of inappropriate and downright disgusting are among the biggest workplace offenders, according to the human resources professionals we interviewed. Here are a dozen desk “don’ts” that make you look less than professional. 1. An avalanche of dishes and food containers Bringing your lunch to work is commendable. But leaving a week’s worth of crusted-over food containers and half of a mug collection in your workspace is atrocious. “Keeping a lot of items you use for eating scattered all over your desk shows a lack of time management and a lack of respect for your coworkers and the shared office space,” said Jodi Barbarino, a director of HR and recruitment in Miami. 2. A swarm of sticky notes In a 2017 survey conducted by the staffing firm OfficeTeam, more than half of the senior managers interviewed for it said that “having a messy or disorganized workspace” was the “most distracting or annoying” thing about employees’ work areas. And one of the easiest ways to create visual insanity is to accumulate so many sticky notes that you can barely see the surface of your desk anymore. A better strategy: invest in a portable notebook and pen you love, so you’ll use them all the time to keep all your important reminders in one place. 3. Suggestive pictures or calendars You wouldn’t need to decorate your cubicle with explicit images in order to be inappropriate in the eyes of your managers and colleagues. Barbarino said to second guess anything remotely sexy or suggestive. “Even if they’re cartoon images, they can be very offensive, and if sexual in nature it could be treated as sexual harassment,” she said. Yes, that even includes pictures of yourself scantily clad, say, at the beach. 4. An open purse This one is tricky. If your office doesn’t provide a closet or any other proper place for your purse, you might be inclined to leave it on your desk â€" after all, it’s better than the floor. But Barbarino advises against keeping it there, and especially keeping it open. “It looks careless and invites fraudulent behavior,” she said. See if your company will allow you to hang a purse hook under your desk. 5. Anything to elevate your monitor that wasn’t built for the task Resting your monitor on a pile of books not only looks unprofessional, but it makes for a pretty unstable surface. Even worse are reams of printer paper or stacked boxes of business cards used as risers. “They’re an eye sore,” Barbarino said. You’re better off just asking your office manager to place an order for a real monitor riser from Staples. 6. Political paraphernalia In politically fraught times, you may be more passionate than ever about the people you want to vote in or out of office, and about the issues that matter to you. But even if you don’t evangelize at work, simply keeping political pamphlets, posters, pins â€" basically anything promoting your affiliation â€" on your desk runs the risk of making you look inappropriate in the office. 7. Toys “We had one associate who had his overhead bin filled with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys of various kinds,” said Tracy Tibbels, an HR manager at Werner Enterprises and disciplines panelist for the SHRM. “It was a little overwhelming for those who walked past his cube. Management’s perception of this was that he was not ready to move to the next level in his career which led to him being passed over for a promotion into a leadership role.” Tibbels said toys can make you seem immature and tarnish your professional image. 8. Scattered toiletries Unless you’re in the business of product testing, items like deodorant, makeup, and toothbrushes have no place on your desk and can even be unsanitary, according to Barbarino. “While your appearance is important, it shouldn’t be the main focus. Toiletries laying out give the impression you care more about your looks than your job,” she said. If you need to have this stuff on hand for after-work outings, keep a bag of grooming supplies in your desk drawer. 9. A pack of cigarettes Some of your colleagues might find the very act of taking a cigarette break to be unprofessional, so that pack of Camels on your desk isn’t doing you any favors. But the smell of cigarettes â€" even unlit ones â€" could also create an issue for your office mates. 10. Solo cups Big, red plastic cups are for beer pong, not boardrooms. “Solo cups look immature, especially for recent graduates,” Barbarino said. “Since they’re associated with alcohol, employees will wonder if you’re drinking at your desk or if the cup was left over from an office party. Both make you look sloppy.” 11. Seasonal decor that remains up all year round Okay, so you love Halloween. But gourds and ghouls are only appropriate in the fall, according to Nicole Belyna, a recruitment manager at Thompson Creek Window Company and talent acquisition panelist for the SHRM. Keeping decor up after it’s relevant will make you look overzealous at best and lazy or neglectful at worst. Be festive, not forgetful. 12. Outrageous oddities “The weirdest thing I’ve ever seen on anyone’s desk was a faux lion’s rug with a severed ear ornament sitting in the mouth,” said Mark Marsen, a director of HR at Allies for Health + Wellbeing and disciplines panelist for SHRM â€" and he admits that bizarre rug is in his own office. “Our definition of professional is unique,” he said. The lesson? Every work environment is different. Know yours. This article originally appeared on BusinessInsider.com.

Quick Tip Secret Requirement for Career Success - Work It Daily

Quick Tip Secret Requirement for Career Success - Work It Daily There has been a lot written recently about the “do what you love” and “follow your passion” advice being wrong. One author went so far as to make the case Steve Jobs didn’t subscribe to this either, tracking his career progression as a barefoot hippie in college through his meteoric rise at Apple. For me, it’s never been about whether or not to follow your passion. Rather, it’s about understanding true career success and satisfaction (doing something you care about and being rewarded richly for it), actually comes from the ability to intersect passion with problem solving. In the video below, I explain why the secret to true career success lies in a strategy that contains both. Watch the video and then ask yourself, “What problem do I passionately care about solving?” Answer that and I GUARANTEE you’ll start to find your true calling. Your Next Step If you are struggling to stay positive and motivated in your job search, then I suggest you watch all four videos from my new job search training. This video series is 100% FREE and designed to help you understand what’s going wrong in your job search. Pride and diversity in the workplace

Pride and diversity in the workplace Pride and diversity in the workplacePosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell Some of Australias highest profile businesses are leading the march towards creating gay-friendly workplaces. Telstra, IBM, ING Australia and the Australian Federal Police are some of the leading employers who have signed up as foundation members for the Pride in Diversity program. The program, which was launched on 10 February 2010, aims to assist employers in responding to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees. Pride in Diversity will work closely with human resource departments to assist with the inclusion and equality of LGBT workers within all sectors of the Australian workforce. Research shows that up to 60 per cent of LGBT people experience some form of harassment at work during their careers. Thats four times the rate of the general population, says Pride in Diversity Director Dawn Hough. Members of the program have access to orga nisational support from an account manager, an LGBT workplace training session, invitations to seminars, and members-only website resources. Businesses are encouraged to jump on board and promote a ritterlich and diverse workplace, which in turn will reduce the costs of complaint resolution, absenteeism and staff turnover costs which can arise if an LGBT employee does not feel safe, welcome or suffers from workplace abuse. Our research shows that the inability to be oneself at work, to constantly feel the need to self-edit conversations and to take on a different persona in order to be accepted, has a very real impact not only on the employee but on the organisation itself, says Doctor Raymond Trau from the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney. Another incentive for businesses to sign-up is to take advantage of the pink dollar niche market. With the annual disposable income of Australian gay and lesbian households estimated at $10 billion in 2004, the purchasing power of the LGBT community is a force to be reckoned with. Studies have also shown that the LGBT market is more inclined to buy products from companies that uphold diversity policies. Pride in Diversity is Australias first employer support program for the inclusion of LGBT employees, and is in partnership with ACON, Diversity Council Australia and Stonewall UK.
