Measure What Matters - Workology

Measure What Matters How Do You Measure What Matters? Sometimes blogging serves as a form of therapy for me.  This blog post was one of those times.  I actually wrote this post 24 hours before my mother woke up from her medical coma.    My mom had coded earlier in the weekend and the doctor had told my family in the ER that she would likely not make it through the night.  I was helpless so I wanted to  visualize  the outcome because truth be told, I was having a very hard time staying positive.   I was also extremely emotional and scared to death.  This might seem confusing for you to read especially since Wednesday I wrote about God having no place in the workplace.  That blog post like many others are written a week in advance.  Still while Im not overly religious, I do believe in God and the power of prayer and positive thinking.   Can You Measure the Price of Love and Life?   My Mother had a severe asthma attack late last week.  She quit breathing, didnt have a pulse, and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.  It was a scary time for our family these last 96 hours.  My husband and I made the 5 1/2 hour drive to Kansas to be with my mom, my sisters, and my dad.  Sunday morning she was awoken from her coma and brought back to us.  I am so very blessed. I have never in my life felt helpless, fear, anger, and love all at the very same time.  And I never want to again. The last 96 hours have reminded me that what matters is surrounding ourselves with those that we love.  Loving completely and living fully.  That means letting go, being yourself, and believing in who, what, and how you wish.  Putting your hangups, past grievances behind you.  Letting go of insecurities, anger, spitefullness, and negativity.  Being you proudly, boldly, and without apology. Over the last 8 weeks leading up to my mothers hospital stay, I have had a personal need and hunger for more.  And so Ive meditated, practiced yoga, journaled, and listened to myself free from the opinions, judgement, and influence of others.  And this weekends events pushed me to a conclusion. How Do You Measure What Matters? What matters is you.  What matters is living your life in a way that suits you achieving the goals, dreams, and passion set for you by you.  What matters is following your heart and supporting the dreams and desires of those you love.  What matters is me.  What matters is you.  What matters is found within your heart, mind, body, and soul.  Our paths and journey to reach this clarity and certainty are as different and unique as ourselves.  For you it may be religion, for me it may be spirituality.  For others it may be something we view singular, small and insignificant.  But this is about us and not others and so our view or vision may be different and that doesnt make it any less important or significant. What matters is living your life with passion and fearlessness above all others.  It starts with you.  It starts with me. I love you Mom.  You are what matters to me. Thankfully, my mom is expected to make a full recovery.  She should be released from the hospital next week.  And I know when she reads this she will likely be upset with me, and thats okay.  She doesnt like to be written about.

Feedback Crucial to Your Job Search

Feedback Crucial to Your Job Search TweetTo see ourselves as others see us: its never more necessary than when were in job search. Employers and networking contacts will judge us based on superficial things: a handshake, an email address, a 10-minute phone screening. We think we can guess the impression were making, but then we dont hear back after the phone screening, or the in-person interview doesnt result in an offer. The reason may have been substantial or trivial. If your job search is not getting the results you want, it may be time for a reality check from others. Unfortunately, youre unlikely to get feedback from interviewers, recruiters or other company representatives. Between worries about lawsuits and company reputation and just simply being too busy, they will usually decline to comment. Get feedback from friends (especially if they work in your field, in HR, or have been involved in hiring), job club buddies, a career coach, a resume writer. Insist that people tell you at least one thing you can improve. Ask for feedback about: Your answers to key questions, especially What are you looking for? Why did you leave your job? and Tell me about yourself. Your interviewing skills overall. Your interview apparel. Your breath and your scents. Avoid scented products, which may be more overpowering than you think. If you have breath issues, brushing and mouthwash may not be enough; you may want to take herbal capsules such as MintAssure. The three items mentioned above: your handshake, email address and business card. Your email signature. How you talk. Are you easy to comprehend? If not, can you accommodate your listeners by speaking more slowly, pausing often, and making sure you have a static-free phone connection? Your resume, social media profiles, cover letters and other job search documents. Some special tips may be in order here: If youre working with a professional writer, let them know youll be gathering feedback and discuss when and how youll work that into the editorial process. Asking for changes after the project is finished may result in extra charges. Also, ask more than one person, and take their opinions with a grain of salt. You may find that if you ask 5 people for their opinions on your resume, youll get five very different opinions, some of which directly contradict each other! Discuss the responses with your writer, and look for repeating themes. Get mentally prepared. Before you ask for honest feedback, prepare yourself to accept it gratefully and without emotional reaction, so as to keep the lines of communication open. If you wince, the person will be less frank next time. And realize that giving honest feedback tactfully is a tricky skill; you cant expect everyone to be good at it. By practicing asking for feedback, accepting it calmly and integrating it effectively, youre developing valuable workplace and life skills and being courageous. Appreciate yourself for that! Learn From My Experiences - Melissa Llarena

Learn From My Experiences Learn From My Experiences My fortune is that I benefited from a set of professional, academic, and personal circumstances that I am fully aware usually  never happen to individuals.   My plan is to share what I have learned from having: dissected 1,000+ performance evaluations, reported to 20+ bosses, lived in 7 zip codes, worked in 2 foreign countries, transitioned directly from financial services to advertising, started a career coaching firm as a newbie mom, coached lawyers that no longer desired to practice law, helped a plethora of clients with compelling raw materials yet lackluster interview performance skills, earned 2 full rides to top academic institutions, and left law school. My career portfolio includes having worked in 16 business units (human resources, investment management, employment law, treasury services, internet marketing, customer service, financial product training, account management, telemarketing, pricing, digital strategy, planning) as well as in global, re gional, and local capacities. These experiences taught me that there are similarities across roles within organizations and the differences are a matter of learning and applying new vocabulary words which makes leaping from one role or sector to another much easier than some folks make it to be.Meanwhile, my academic circumstances drive home the idea that there are costs and benefits to being a major nerd.   The benefits are that you can be compensated for your wits such as when I earned a full ride to NYU.     Costs happen when you strive for a profession in which your heart is not as invested in as your credit cards.   This happened to me when I took the LSAT twice, attended, and aptly quit Fordham Law School within one semester. Then post-law school, graduate entrance exams were still part of my life.  I almost took the GRE yet gratefully opted for the GMAT.   I rocked the GMAT during my second try, and earned another full ride this time to the Tuck School of Business at Dartmou th and  no  I never attempted to take the MCAT because I freak out at the sight of skeletons. Then there is my personal life which offers its own insights.   As a new mom with a startup, I had to accept that moms have to apply twice the effort to accomplish non-mommy goals and be comfortable pushing forward at slower speeds in the pursuit of dropping jaws and kicking butt in their professions.   However, I will not accept the notion that what I expect from myself should be any less than what I expect from my son (or my clients).   With this in mind, when evaluating personal decisions, I always ask myself what would I counsel my little man, and I encourage others to use a fitting filter when evaluating choices that matter.

how to create a resume from scratch

step by step instructions to make a resume without any preparation step by step instructions to make a resume without any preparation Thinking about how to compose an extraordinary resume that will flaunt your aptitudes and encounter and get you meets? Here's a tenderfoot's manual for how to make a resume that will get an employing supervisor's eyes. Your resume ought to be made out of the accompanying segments: Contact information. This is really clear â€" this is the header for your resume, and it's the place your name, address, telephone number, and email address go. It's fine to include a connection your LinkedIn profile or your site in the event that you need to, however don't jumble this segment up to a lot. Profile or features. This area is discretionary, however profiles or feature segments have supplanted destinations at the highest point of cutting edge resumes. This is a brisk rundown of the features of your qualities and achievements, summarizing in only a couple of visual cues who you are as a competitor and what you bring to the table. The thought is to give a general surrounding to your application, setting the recruiting supervisor up to see the remainder of your resume through that perspective. Experience: This is the meat of your resume. You should list each activity (from latest to least later) â€" where you worked, what your title was, and the years you worked there. Underneath that, you ought to have a bulleted rundown of what you accomplished while working there. Also, this is significant: These projectiles ought not be utilized to simply clarify your activity obligations. Rather, you should concentrate on achievements â€" things you accomplished that were basically satisfying the premise obligations of your activity. For example, rather than oversaw site, it's far more grounded to state something like, expanded Web traffic by 15% in a half year â€" at the end of the day, clarify how you performed, not exactly what your activity was. At the point when you're choosing what to incorporate, give yourself authorization to expel things that don't fortify your application. You needn't bother with three lines clarifying exhausting, fundamental employment obligations â€" particularly if these duties will be suggested by your title. So also, you don't have to incorporate that mid year work from eight years back, or that activity you accomplished for three weeks that didn't work out. Your resume is a promoting archive, not a far reaching posting of every little thing about you, so incorporate the things that fortify your bid, and pare down the rest. Instruction: For the vast majority, this area should simply be a line or two, disclosing where you went to class and what qualification you graduated with. Also, note that for the most part your instruction ought to go underneath your work understanding, in light of the fact that by and large bosses are generally inspired by what work experience you've had. Driving with your training just covers what will make generally appealing to a business. Discretionary different areas: After that, you may incorporate some extra discretionary segments, similar to Volunteer Work (or Community Involvement), Skills (if not evident from the experience segment), or Miscellaneous. Fleshing out your abilities and involvement with these segments can exhibit an enthusiasm for the work that your work experience can't generally do. For example, in case you're applying for an I.T. position and you run an online programming conversation bunch in your extra time, notice that. Or then again in case you're going after an instructing position and you audit kids' books for your site, that is essential to specify as well. These kinds of subtleties help portray you as an applicant. Things not to include: Your resume is for experience and achievements as it were. Its not the spot for emotional attributes, similar to extraordinary administration aptitudes or inventive trailblazer. Shrewd bosses overlook anything abstract that candidate expound on themselves in light of the fact that such a significant number of people groups self-evaluations are fiercely incorrect, so your resume should adhere to target realities. Extra no-no's: Do exclude a photograph of yourself, data about your age, any notice of secondary school, ailments, or relatives. By and large organizing: In the entirety of the areas above, you ought to utilize visual cues, not complete sentences. Employing administrators will just skim your resume at first, and huge squares of content are hard to skim. A business will retain more data about you with a brisk skim if your data is orchestrated in visual cues as opposed to passages. Length: when in doubt, your resume shouldn't be more than two pages (or one, in case you're an ongoing graduate). The more drawn out your resume is, the more uncertain a business is to see the parts you need them to see. The underlying sweep of your resume is around 20 seconds - do you need that separated among three pages, or do you need it concentrated on the most significant things you need to pass on? Short and succinct implies that businesses are bound to peruse the parts you most consideration about. In addition, long continues can make you seem to be somebody who can't alter and doesn't have a clue what data is basic and what's less significant. Configuration: Avoid abnormal hues or untraditional structures. All most recruiting supervisors need from a resume: a compact, simple to-filter rundown of what you've practiced, sorted out sequentially by position, in addition to an especially eminent aptitudes, all introduced in an arrangement that they can rapidly examine and get the features. I initially composed this article for distribution on AOL.com.
